Code4Thought was hosted in the AI Industry Connect Talks, for the month of October. The series are organised by SKEL | The AI lab, Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications at NCSR Demokritos and supported by ahedd DIH. The talk was held online on 12 October 2022, at 14.00 EEST with invited speaker, Yiannis Kanellopoulos, CEO of Code4Thought.
Talk title: Beyond Accuracy: Or why the Quality and Trustworthiness of AI systems matters
Abstract: In his book “21 lessons for the 21st Century”, historian Yuval Harari notes that “Already today, ‘truth’ is defined by the top results of the Google search”. Last year, journalist Karen Hao’s article about Facebook’s AI (Artificial Intelligence) systems, reveals a shocking truth; tech organisations may not be in control of their AI technology or at least they don’t promote such culture if this impedes their growth, or profits (or both). Even governmental authorities and organisations in Europe and US fail to control their AI systems leading to unfair treatment of their citizens, especially the ones who are more vulnerable. All these may not come as a surprise if we consider that the way systems are being built reflects the culture of their owner organisations. In our session we will show how pervasive AI technology is in our lives, why evaluating only the accuracy of an AI system can be misleading in respect to its quality and what we can do in order to mitigate/minimise any subsequent risks/failures from the operation of it.
